This is the bohemian district of Barcelona where every class of society is displayed. Recently the Raval has gone through a complete change.  The city council has built the “Rambla del Raval” which is a beautiful pedestrian only street I the heart of this district.  
The north part of the Raval starting from “calle Carme” is filled with nice inexpensive restaurants, bars and wonderfully original cafes.  It lives up to its bohemian roots.  Also in the north part you will find the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) along with various other art galleries. The plaza in front of the museum is point not to miss.
