Where to go shopping in Barcelona?


In the heart of Barcelona, you will find a commercial ax of 5km of shops starting at the top of Las Ramblas in Plaça Catalunya, going through the Passeig de Gracia and ends in Avinguda Diagonal. The most of this road is reserved for pedestrians, which makes it very pleasant to gather from shop to shop without worrying about the traffic.

Avinguda Diagonal


The main malls are situated in the Avinguda Diagonal. Don't get lost on this big avenue!
At the North of the Diagonal, there is the spanish mall "El Corte Inglès" build on several floors where you will find all kinds of products: books, CDs, sport articles, clothes, food, etc. There is one in every big avenue of Barcelona. Sometimes they are used as meeting point.

L’Illa Diagonal
is the "chic" mall of the city, where you can find brands of Prêt-à-Porter, jewellery, electronics, decoration, etc. Don't miss the underground floor plenty of food stands and also open restaurants! Sushi, noodles, pasta, fish...
After the Plaça Francesc Maciá another Corte Ingles precedes the shops that will lead you to the Passeig de Gracia: Dolce & Gabbana, Benetton, Comptoir des Cotonniers, Mango, Zara, Blanco, etc.

Before arriving to the Passeig de Gracia, you will also find some decoration and luminary shops like Maisons du Monde, Habitat, Bisoca et Botey, La Garriga Verda, etc.
 

Eixample


The District of the Eixample with its Passeig de Gracia is famous for its design and fashion shops. Here you can find all shops of perfume, clothes and furniture.

Here are all the fashion designers: Chanel, Valentino, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Adolfo Dominguez,Yves-Saint Laurent, Hermès and Armani stay together with Spanish brands like Loewe, Purificación Garcia, Armand Basi, Camper. You can also find cheaper brands as Mango, Benetton, Esprit, Zara or Kookaï.

All the bigger banks are also situated in this district as well as prestigious jewelers like Rabat, Carrera&Carrera, Cartier and Tous.
The commercial streets of the Eixample have a huge choice of good restaurants really appreciated by businesswomen and businessmen.
 

Barrio Gótico


Some ancient shops offer original and unique products in the old city of Barcelona. You are looking for a shop specialized in dried fruit or old folk clothes, Catalans sweets or traditional dishes? Just go to the Barrio Gotico, you will find all that you are looking for! This district combines shopping and culture. In the Roman center of the city, you can find a lot of shops of original antiques, bookshops, and shops of young stylists.

Also in Las Ramblas, avenue that limits the district of Raval and the Barrio Gotico, there are plenty of gift shops of Barcelona. You will find commercial souvenirs like t-shirt, bulls, t-shirt of FC Barcelona, Sevillanas dresses, etc. but the most typical souvenirs from Barcelona are Gaudi products: Calendars, dishes, notebooks, mosaics and other gifts in the style of this famous architect.

Don't forget the gastronomic souvenirs! Bring back a bottle of Cava (same taste and less expensive than Champagne), of wine or cognac, there are not expensive at all. But, please don't buy Mexican hats, you are not in Mexico!

Food Markets

Some of the food market are open every day of the week but usually most of them open from Monday to Saturday during the mornings and some days on the evening too. La Boqueria El Mercat de La Boqueria is the most famous market in Barcelona situated on Las Ramblas it makes its visit a delight for the tourists and Barcelonans who visit it. It'll catch your eye with the color of the fruits and the spices at the entrance but inside you can find absolutely everything, from the most typical Spanish and Catalan products to those from all around the world. You cannot avoid this visit if you come to Barcelona !

MercatSantAntoni El Mercat de Sant Antoni it’s similar from the one of La Boqueria but you won't find that much tourists at the entrance. There are stands as well as a Tapas Bar in the center of the market. Like in most of the Spanish markets it is normal to find a little bar where to snack, where sellers do their breaks, or where husbands "relax" during shopping time.
Sellers are very friendly and welcoming. Don't miss the stand of sweets and pastry at the entrance of the Market.

Flea Markets


El Mercat Dels Encants is one of the biggest, popular and surprising flea markets of Barcelona.

All kind of products are sold there: old, new, the appliances next the antiques, and those close to cosmetics. There is a lot to choose, it’s common to see some sellers just putting their products on a sheet and in a disorganized way; you will have to look it up for yourself. On Saturday there is a lot of people thus it is better to avoid this day if you can. If you like to negotiate, to pick through the best bargains, you have to arrive early in the morning. For the antiques, the auction begins at 7.00 am when all the sellers are here, and by 12.00 am there are good offers for the unsold. Have a look to the amazing furniture exposed in the hall next to this market, you can find some treasures.
It's normal to negotiate, enjoy it! The market is open on the afternoon but a lot of stands close at midday and in August a lot of sellers are closed all the month.

El Mercadillo de la Plaça de Sant Josep is the best place to find a unique and artistic souvenir; it is a small market of Catalan artists with their easels, set up in the shadow of the church. There are around 15 artists that practice all the styles, from water-color to oil painting. Some paint landscapes, others paint market stalls. Artists are friendly and will discuss with you if you speak a little Spanish.
Some other painters set up their easels in Las Ramblas every afternoon, if you want to have your portrait or a caricature.

El Mercat de Sant Antoni also has its flea market situated around the food market; it is open every Sunday from 8am to 3pm. You will discover this popular market of second hand books, magazines, comics, postcards, bottle tops of cava/champagne, stamps,...Everything that attract collectors. People bring their old and new to sell, buy or exchange.

Diagonal and L’illa
Cross the city on Diagonal Avenue and head to the modern mall L’illa. You'll find everything you need! Right next to it you also have Centre Pedralbes with another selection of shops.
Places of interest: Torres Trade, Palau Reial de Pedralbes, Monestir de Pedralbes, Camp Nou and Palau de Congressos de Catalunya.

Shopping Useful Information


Opening Hours


Normally the shops are open between 9.00-10.00 am and close around 8.30-9.00 pm, from Monday to Saturday. Small shops close for lunch time between 1.30-2 pm and 5.00pm.
All the shops are allowed to open eleven Sundays per year. However most of the shops of Las Ramblas are opened all week long. Bakeries, Kiosks, and Flower Shop are allowed to be opened on Sunday. Don't worry, if you want to go shopping on Sunday, you are lucky, the Maremagnum mall situated on the Port Vell is open every Sunday!


Tips


  • - In most of the shops you will be required to show your Identity Card if you want to pay by credit card.
  • - Sellers won't approach you most of the time, only in the luxury shops they will come to offer their help to you.
  • - In the grocery stores or in the market, fruits and vegetables are not allowed to be touch before purchase.
  • - Be careful with the opening hours a lot of shops close at midday and are not opened until 5.00 pm..
  • - Sales period are in January then in July and August. Check the "Rebajas" posters or "Rebaixas" in Catalan, and go for it !
  • - Visitors who don't live in U.E can have the Tax Free for shopping.
  • - Alcohol and tobacco prices are lower in Spain, if you are tempted to stock up don’t forget the authorized quantity.


Sales – Rebaixes


If you are in Barcelona between the beginning of January and the beginning of March or between the 1st of July and the end of August you will be in the perfect dates to go shopping during the sales!

During this time, Barcelona Shops do the famous "rebaixes" or Sales. You will find good deals until -75% ! Normally prices go from the higher price to the lower price so, time passed and prices are lower.
