Cadaqués

CADAQUÉS De Costa Brava vormt het meest noorderlijk gelegen deel van de kust van Catalonië en het is één van de mooiste kusten in Spanje. In het hart van Cap de Creus ligt Cadaqués, een gebied gesitueerd in het ongebruikelijke natuurlijke landschap van de stijle heuvels die het land van Alt Empordà doorsnijden voor ze in de vorm van klippen in de zee verdwijnen. Dit sfeervolle dorp met wegen naar de zee heeft uitstekende stranden en rustige baaien met helder water dat samen met de ongeëvenaarde toeristische infrastructuur, een ieder aantrekt die op zoek is naar een plek om van de zon en de zee te genieten. De natuurlijke haven en het zeer schone zeewater bieden ideale omstandigheden om allerlei sporten en water aktiviteiten te beoefenen, zoals duiken, zeilen of windsurfen. Het Oude Centrum Aan het uiteinde van de baai van Cadaqués rijst het netwerk van nauwe geplaveide straatjes en witte huizen die de oude stad vormen. Boven de horizon van de stad, kan men de contouren van de kerk van Santa Maria onderscheiden, een zorgzaam gerenoveerde kerk met een witte gevel die een geweldige reredos in Barok stijl. Vele notabele gebouwen in de oude stad zijn getekend door de Modernistische architectuur, zoals bijvoorbeeld Casa Serinyena. Gedurende de eerste decennia van de 20e eeuw, werd het stadje een belangrijk cultureel centrum in Europa. Veel bekende kunstenaars zoals Picasso, Chagall en Klein vonden een bijzondere bron van inspiratie in deze prachtige hoek van de provincie Girona. Het was echter Salvador Dalí die de internationale roem naar Cadaqués bracht. Het artistieke genie verbleef hier in zijn kindertijd en vestigde zijn huis er. Zin huis-museum, naast de baai van Port Lligat in het noorden van het stadje, biedt de gelegenheid om een belangrijk deel van het uitgebreide oeuvre van deze meester der surrealisme te leren kennen. Het uitgebreide culturele aanbod van Cadaqués verschilt van de vele musea tot kunst galeriën zoals het gemeentelijk kunstmuseum dat werken tentoonstelt van kunstenaars die een nauwe band met Cadaqués onderhielden of het Perrot-Moore museum dat werken van Europeese graphische kunst samenbrengt. We mogen ook zeker niet het nu traditionele Internationale Muziek Festival vergeten, dat jaarlijks in de kerk van Santa Maria gehouden wordt. Cuisine en omgeving De rijke culinaire traditie van Empordà wordt goed vertegenwoordigd in Cadaquès, want in het stadje kun je vele specialiteiten uit deze streek proeven. Gerechten zoals vis "suquet" (stoofpot), rijstpannetje of inktvis met erwten laten een goede combinatie van producten uit de zee en het binnenland zien. De maaltijden worden natuurlijk gebruikt met uitstekende wijnen met het label Ampurdán-Costa Brava Denominatie van Origine, waaronder de “novell” (nieuwe) wijn zeker genoemd moet worden. Zoete wijnen worden er ook gemaakt, evenals uitzonderlijk lichte, fruitige, jonge rode. De strategische lokatie van Cadaqués stelt je in staat om andere plaatsen in de regio van Alt Empordà te gaan ontdekken. Enkele kilometers naar het noorden ligt Colera, een dorpje aan zee met prachtige stranden zoals Garvet en Els Morts. Andere interessante plaatsen zijn Llançà, met een levendige jachthaven en de Port de la Selva, waar het middeleeuwse klooster van Sant Pere de Rodes staat. Naar het zuiden van Cap de Creus ligt Roses, waar zich nog resten van de oude citadel (16e eeuw) bevinden, en Castelló d’Empuries, waar een prachtige kerk van Santa María (10e eeuw) staat. Natuur liefhebbers kunnen de vele uitgestrekte, beschermde gebieden in dit deel van de Costa Brava bezoeken. In de Golf van Roses kan men het natuurpark van Aiguamolls de l'Empordà bezoeken, een belangrijk ecologisch reservaat (vooral voor watervogels). Wat betreft het natuurpark van Cap de Creus, het is een uitstekende plek vanuit een natuurlijk oogpunt en een duidelijk voorbeeld van het uiterlijk van de Costa Brava.

Girona

GIRONA Set in the valley of the Ter, at the confluence of four rivers, we find the city of Girona. One of them, the Onyar, divides the historic centre from the modern city. The old centre of this Catalan city preserves remains of its long history, from the time it was founded by the Romans in the 1st century B. C. To them we owe its original wall, whose remains stretch from the Archaeological Walk to the Wall Gardens. La Força Vella Set in this walled enclosure (La Força Vella), stands the Cathedral. Its romanesque origin is shown in its fortress-like appearance and strategic location, although the most outstanding aspect is an immense Gothic nave, the widest in Medieval European architecture. Inside, it preserves one of the textile jewels of Catalan Romanesque, the Creation Tapestry. Beside the entrance staircase to the cathedral is the Pia Alomoina, an old charitable institution in Gothic style. Girona has other key pieces of religious architecture, like the Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, a historic-artistic monument; or the church of Sant Nicolau. These are Romanesque churches whose apses and octagonal cupolas deserve a close look as they form key elements of the Catalan medieval style. The convent of Sant Doménech, built in Gothic style and clear example of the importance of the religious orders in the colonisation and repopulation of Catalonia during the Middle Ages, stands amid gardens. Also to this historical period belong important displays of Arab and Jewish art, the result of these cultures living side-by-side with Christianity for centuries. So, you will discover the multitude of small streets making up El Call, the Jewish quarter of Girona. Calle Força is the heart of this district, which had a synagogue and centres of cabalistic study. The Plaça del Oli and the Plaça del Vi maintain all their flavour; and, in them are some of the greatest jewels of medieval palace architecture, like the Fontana d’Or. The Call is currently one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in Spain. Not far from here, a Capuchin convent houses the Arab Baths, where we should point out a pavilion built on eight fine columns and crowned by an octagonal cupola. Before crossing the river and walking towards modern Girona, you can climb up to the belltower of Sant Feliu or go to the Pont de Pedra (Stone Bridge) over the Onyar, where you can get overhead views of all the houses in the city and their façades painted in ochres, dark blues and copper. On the other side of the river you will find one of the most beautiful examples of Catalan Modernism, the work of Rafael Masó. Outstanding buildings are the Teixidor Factory and the Punxa House, among others. The Hospital de Santa Caterina, a Baroque building from the 17th century, is also in this area. And, on the other side of the Passeig Devesa, is one of the recreational areas for the people of Girona, the Parc Devesa. This is an exotic forest area largest made up of plane trees, giving a strong contrast with the city's medieval architecture. The Costa Brava Girona's excellent position, between the end of the Pyrenean chain and the Costa Brava, bathed by the Mediterranean sea, makes it easy for you to tour the whole province. The coastline that unfolds from Portbou (in the north) to Blanes (in the south) is made up of medieval churches, fishing villages, Roman remains, wide beaches and coves with clear water, among areas of cliffs. In all of them, the juxtaposition of sea and mountains forms an unforgettable landscape. You must not miss places like El Port de la Selva, with its monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes; the Cap de Creus Natural Park; the landscapes of Cadaqués and the gulf of Roses; historic-artistic sites like Pals; or walled towns beside the sea, like Tossa del Mar. And these are just some examples. Right on the Costa Brava, in the village of Begur and on Aiguablava beach, is its Parador de Turismo. It is a modern building that has all kinds of leisure facilities as well as enviable views of the cliffs of Punta D'es Muts, on which it is located. This lovely environment, surrounded by sea and pinewoods, is a fantastic place for discovering Girona cuisine. The combination of products from the coast and inland create recipes like snail stew, flame-grilled vegetables with romesco sauce (made with almonds and chorizo pepper) or rice with fish as starters. Among second courses, you can choose from grilled fish, chicken with spiny lobster or rabbit with chocolate. "Crema catalana" (custard with caramelised sugar on top) or apples in puff pastry, might be among the desserts you choose. All this suitably accompanied by whites, reds and rosés with the Ampurdán-Costa Brava Denomination of Origin. The summits and valleys of the Eastern Pyrenees are also worth a detailed tour. The valleys of Ribes and Núria soften a mountainous landscape crowned by high summits and crossed by fast-flowing rivers. The natural and landscape wealth of the Pyrenees is enriched by the medieval buildings of Puigcerdá or Sant Joan de les Abadesses, the popular architecture of mountain villages like Queralbs or ski stations like those at La Molina or Masella. The high natural value of Girona has earned the protection, as natural parks, of the Empordà wetlands and the Volcanic Area of La Garrotxa. These places are very different from one another, which tell us of the richness of this Catalan province. They can be toured with the help of information offered by their information centres.

Palacio Guell

Gaudí kreeg de opdracht om een paleis te ontwerpen op een bouwkavel van 18 bij 12 meter. Het paleis kreeg een koepel, ramen van beslagen glas en trappen die een optische illusie creëeren die het paleis groter laat lijken dan het werkelijk is.
Bezienswaardig: Kelder, deuren, centrale hal, en terras.
Het gebouw werd gebouwd op enkele kelders met champignon-vormige pilaren en stammen als piramides. De buitendeuren zijn van ijzerwerk met kronkelende gesculptuurde slangen die beweging representeren. De grote centrale hal heeft een parabolische koepel. Het prachtige terras is een waar openlucht museum.

Parque Guell & Casa Museo Gaudi

Het Casa-Museu Gaudí, gelegen in het Parc Güell, was één van de drie gebouwen die gebouwd waren met het achterliggende idee om als huisvesting te dienen. Dit huis werd ontworpen door Fransesc Berenguer, één van Gaudí's assistent-architecten voor de Sagrada Família. Het huis werd in 1905 opgeleverd en in 1906 werd het bewoond door Gaudí die er woonde tot op enkele maanden voor zijn dood. In December 1926 werd het huis volgens de wil van Gaudí, beschreven in zijn testament, verkocht en de opbrengst werd geïnvesteerd in de bouw van de Sagrada Familia.

Barrio Gotico

Catedral de Barcelona

Gelegen op de plek van een Paleochristelijke basiliek. De bouw begon tijdens de Romaanse periode, maar werd pas in de Gotische periode afgerond wat ook duidelijk in de stijl te zien is.
Bezienswaardig:
Gothische reredos en schilderijen, de monstrans, het koor, de gewelfde hoekstenen, de beslagen glazen ramen, de crypte en de tombe van Santa Eulalia. Karakteristieken van het monument Type monument: Kathedraal. Periode: 15e eeuw Artistieke stijl: Gothisch De buitenkant van het gebouw is somber en heeft als decoratie alleen enkele verticale steunberen. De deur van San Ivo representeert de zogenaamde Catalaanse Gotiek. De schepen aan de binnenkant zijn bijna allemaal even hoog, wat de indruk geeft dat men zich in één enkele ruimte bevindt. De laterale kapelletjes hebben een bovengalerij die het geheel van meer licht en openheid voorzien. De basis van de dom is aan de binnenkant bedekt met handgemaakt houtsnijwerk. De voorgevel werd recentelijk pas gebouwd (late 19e eeuw, vroege 20e eeuw), hoewel het ontwerp gebaseerd was op het originele project uit 1408. De deur van het klooster naar de kathedraal en de kapel van Santa Llúcia zijn van groot belang en zeker bezienswaardig. Palau de la Musica Catalana

Het werd in 1908 opgeleverd, nadat de beroemde architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner er drie jaar aan gebouwd had. Het is één van de belangrijkste concertgebouwen van de wereld en een perfect voorbeeld van het Catalaanse modernisme. Het interieur is gedecoreerd met keramische mozaïeken en polychroom glas met bloemmotieven. In 1997 werd het door de UNESCO tot Wereld Erfgoed verklaard.

La Sagrada Famila de Barcelona

In 1883 ging de beroemde meester Gaudí ermee akkoord om dit werk te af te maken, nadat de architect Francisco de Paula reeds aan de bouw begonnen was. Gaudí werkte aan dit meesterwerk tot zijn dood.
Bezienswaardig: De Geboorte Facade, de Facade van de Passie en de vele details in de gehele buitenkant van het gebouw.
Op dit moment wordt er nog steeds gewerkt om deze enorme kerk af te krijgen. De eerste architect die aan dit bouwwerk begon voorzag een Neogothisch gebouw. Toen na zijn dood Gaudí de verantwoordelijkheid echter over nam, respecteerde hij het originele ontwerp globaal, maar begon al snel zijn persoonlijke stempel op het gebouw te drukken en deed de dingen vooral op zijn eigen unieke manier. Hij rondde de kapel van San José af, evenals de crypte en de Geboorte Facade. Tegenwoordig is het werk in handen van anderen. De Facades en de gehele buitenkant zijn een schouwspel van extensieve decoratieve elementen in heldere kleuren. De hoofdfacade van de Passie heeft een bijzonder Cryptogram.

The chimneys of the roof terrace are sculptures in their own right and are well worth a visit. The area of the roof terrace is wavy with unequal arches. Het enorme rozenraam van polychroom glas (15e eeuw) is zeker interessant om te zien.
Karakteristieken van het monument Type monument: Kerk Periode: 14e Eeuw Artistieke stijl: Gothisch Het is één van de beste voorbeelden van de 14e eeuwse Catalaanse Gotische architectuur. Het is het werk van de architect Berenguer de Montagut en diende als gebedshuis voor scheepseigenaren en handelaren in Gotisch Barcelona. Vanaf de buitenkant ziet het gebouw er ruig en robuust uit, gedomineerd door strakke lijnen. De binnenkant bestaat uit drie schepen, een ambulant en heeft geen transept. De indrukwekkende hoogte van het centrale schip met zijn majesteitelijke octagonale pilaren valt het meest op. Tussen de 4e en 6e eeuw stond op deze plek een Romijns Necropolis dat werd ontdekt tijdens opgravingen in de zestiger jaren. Omgeving: De wijk El Born met vele paleizen en middeleeuwse straatjes.

Sitges

Sitges is one of the most representative towns of Costa de Garraf, Barcelona's southern littoral. Beaches with pristine waters, some of which have been awarded the blue flag eco-label and the proximity of the mountains make of Sitges a privileged destination. The urban centre is also worth a visit. It has beautiful religious buildings such as the churches of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla. Casa de la Vila, a nineteenth-century Gothic revival building and Palau Maricel, with Renaissance, Baroque and medieval elements, are other interesting places to visit in the city. The Modernist aesthetics from the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century left in Sitges beautiful buildings like Cau Ferrat, the house-studio of writer and painter Santiago Rusiñol. This artist moved to Sitges in 1891 and turned it into a meeting point for artists and intellectuals, giving it the bohemian air that it still preserves. Art and Culture Sitges' cultural calendar includes important events such as the International Vintage Car Rally (of National Tourist Interest), Catalonia International Film Festival and the celebration of Corpus Christi. In addition, the traveller has three different museums to visit, in order to become acquainted with the area's cultural life. The house-studio of Rusiñol exhibits his works next to paintings by El Greco, Zuloaga and Picasso, among others. At the Maricel Museum they have Romanesque, Gothic and Modern art collections. To delve more deeply into nineteenth-century Catalan society, you must visit the Romantic Museum. All around, there are innumerable restaurants where to try the local cuisine —in the historic quarter, the harbour and along the beaches. One of the main dishes is "xató", made with curly endive, cod, tuna, anchovies and olives, with a Romescu dressing (made with roasted chilli peppers, toasted almonds, garlic and olive oil). Stewed cuttlefish with potatoes and ali-oli, tuna hotpot and "fideuá" (paella with elbow macaroni instead of rice) are among the delicacies prepared in Sitges. These dishes should be had with some wine with Denominación de Origen Alella, Penedés, or Pla de Bages (Designation of Origin, the seal of quality and origin given in Spain to exceptional products from specific regions). Marinas More than four kilometres of fine, white beaches stretch along the coast of this town near Barcelona. Equipped with all kinds of service facilities, these beaches are the perfect leisure retreat. The best known of these are well connected and their shallow waters do not have a lot of swell. Others are located in remote spots and others are nudist. The marinas have a number of nautical activities available and many leisure companies have adventure programmes that include climbing, potholing and hiking. Sitges is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Coastal Mountain Range, reason why it has some spectacular sceneries. These gorgeous views can be enjoyed from Villafranca del Penedés and Sant Sadurní d´Anoia. The Cistercian Monastery of Santes Creus, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is another exciting trip. The cities of Tarragona and Barcelona are also attractive choices. The ancient Roman Tarraco, situated in the middle of Costa Daurada, is lined with vast beaches, its archaeological compounds have also been declared World Heritage. This same title is held by several sites in Barcelona, like Park Güell, Palau Güell, Casa Milá, Palau de la Música Catalana (Catalonia Music Hall) and the Hospital of Sant Pau. The Gothic quarter, Ciutat Vella and Montjuïc are also excellent places to cover in our journey through the city of Barcelona.
