RENFE runs the Spanish rail network from Madrid to all the major cities and also controls the routes and services that link Spain with France and the rest of European Countries.Train is not the best recommended option to arrive to Barcelona/any other Spanish city unless you can’t flight or drive. Spain begins now to implant high speed trains but for the moment only Sevilla-Madrid-Zaragoza-Barcelona are connected with the AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) and will take a while until we can use it for getting to other European cities.
Nevertheless it’s highly recommended to use the AVE between Barcelona and Madrid, which will get you there in only 3 hours approximately.
The train services to avoid are tranvía, semidirecto and Correo trains, all of which go along at a leisurely pace.
Seat reservations are required on all intercity trains and supplements are payable on many faster trains.

There are direct trains to Barcelona from Paris (journey time 11 hours), Montpellier (journey time: 4 hours 30 minutes), Milan (journey time: 13 hours) and Zurich (journey time: 13 hours). Furthermore, there are eight daily departures to Madrid (journey time: 8 hours with regular train/ 3 hours with AVE).
Sants Estació is Barcelona's main station (a little bit away from the city center but well communicated with 2 Metro lines and urban bus), and serves national and international destinations as well as metropolitan routes.
