Best time to visit Barcelona

Barcelona beach

The best time to visit Barcelona is really a personal opinion, but we can assure you that there is no such thing as a “worst” time to visit the city. The best months to visit Barcelona would however be March, April, May, June, September, October and November, September ranking first!

It is wise to keep several factors in mind that can influence your time in Barcelona: weather, number of tourists, events and festivals.
Barcelona has a nice weather thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate, ie: long and warm summers, mild and short winters and very little rainfall.

Best time to visit

When? From March to July and from September to November
What to do? Events and festival season start and run around 6 months. Sant Jordi, Primavera Sound Festival, La Mercè, la Diada…

Months to avoid if possible
Decorated street in Gracia district

When? August and February
Why? Should you have the opportunity to book your holidays some other time, please do! Most locals flee Barcelona in August to spend nice holidays out of the city.
Things to do? You can still experience the Festa de Gracia (one week long in August) and the GSMA (in February).

March and April

This time of the year the weather in Barcelona is already nice with temperatures reaching around 20 °C, but the sea is still too cold to swim in, except for adventurers! The number of tourists is quite low, which allows you to enjoy the sightseeings without having to queue up too much.

Events:
Easter and Sant Jordi.

May and June

The city starts to warm up in May and June, definitely a good time to visit Barcelona. Thousands of tourists invade Barcelona to enjoy a little sun and also dance till dawn during the first music festivals.

Events:
Primavera Sound Festival, SONAR Festival (electronic music), Formula 1, museum night.

July and August

Thank god Barcelona has a beach!

July and August are the hottest months of the year. Aficionados of sunbathing and occasional dives in the water, the only obstacle you’ll face is finding a spot to lay your beach towel!

For those who prefer exploring the city, we recommend you remain in the street maze of the city center during the hottest hours to protect yourself from the sun and heat.

Events:
Cruilla Festival, Fiesta Major de Gracia.

September - November
El Corte Ingles with christmas decorations

Whereas northern Europe little by little turns the heater on, Barcelona experience a nice Indian summer. The sea is still warm from the hot summer temperatures. The number of tourists significantly drops and locals are back to Barcelona.

Events:
La Mercè, the Diada, Piknic Electronic, Barcelona International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Jazz Festival, art festival...

December - February

A smooth entry into autumn and winter. The temperatures can still reach around 15 to 20 °C in December which is quite conveinient for a Christmas eve out.

February is usually the “worst” month in terms of weather. However, the periode between December and February hosts quite famous events.

Events: the GSMA Mobile World Congress and the march of the three kings.
